Le cercle du chêne, ou le clan des poètes du vivant, ce sont des animaux de forêt qui se rassemblent autour du roi des arbres dans le but de conter des histoires sur l’Homme. Sous le regard du cerf, du hibou et du reste de la faune de l’Anjou et de Bretagne, nous nous retrouvons épiés, jugés et enchâssés dans les récits de ces créatures au savoir infini.
La cover met d’ailleurs en scène ces pelages, plumages et feuillages d’automne, un dessin fort représentatif d’un environnement forestier où le règne animal fomente et commente la société. Cette palette saisonnière est signée David Thiérrée, l’illustrateur derrière les artworks de Mork ou encore Celestia, parmi tant d’autres.
La terre et son humus sont chers à Joanna Maeyens (alias La Griesche) et elle en témoigne son attachement au travers de paroles rurales et champêtres. La géographie régionale pose le décor en Bretagne, les différents protagonistes des contes sillonnent la contrée au gré des rivières et des champs qui délimitent leurs pérégrinations.
Le style de Cercle du Chêne s’identifie pleinement grâce à la collaboration d’artistes bien ancrés dans leur histoire, leur touche musicale et leur personnalité. La Griesche s’entoure de musiciens de talent et de réels passionnés. L’ensemble crée une atmosphère toute particulière et reconnaissable, ce qui est vraiment révélateur et peu aisé pour cette branche du black metal. La voix se cale souvent sur un rythme « au tambourin » de ménestrel à discerner d’une batterie mi profonde mi tintante. Ça et là ces tintements de cymbales se superposent aux organes synthétiques, pour notre plus grand plaisir.
‘Sur les toits d’une tour’ est un titre purement dungeon synth avec une touche médiévale particulière et des chœurs masculins. Les parties de synthétiseurs composées par Hyver rendent hommage au style de la manière la plus honorable et personnelle quant à cette particularité moyenâgeuse. Geoffroy Dell'Aria (Skyforger, Paydretz, Grylle) nous revient accompagné de sa cornemuse avec une subtilité évocatrice sur ‘Aux jours de chasse’ où le soufflet celtique s’immisce dans la mélodie épique et symphonique. Les guitares reprennent le tout avec brio créant une ambiance digne des plus grands noms du genre.
L’EP "Première Rencontre" paru en 2023 nous gâtait de 4 titres plus sombres, avec une production plus stridente et une voix brute dont les arrangements sont plus distincts sur ce premier album. "Récits d’Automne et de Chasse" sortira le 21 mars prochain sur le label de coeur et de sang de La Griesche, Antiq Records. Un incontournable d’un genre auto-défini et une pépite qui restera dans l’histoire de l’Epic Dungeon Synth Black Metal.

Le cercle du chêne, or the clan of living poets, are forest animals who gather around the king of trees to tell stories about mankind. Under the gaze of the stag, the owl and the rest of the fauna of Anjou and Brittany (north west of France), we find ourselves spied on, judged and embedded in the tales of these creatures with infinite knowledge.
The cover features these autumnal coats, feathers and foliage, a design highly representative of a forest environment where the animal kingdom foments and comments on society. This seasonal palette is by David Thiérrée, the illustrator behind the artworks for Mork and Celestia, among many others.
The earth and its humus are dear to Joanna Maeyens (aka La Griesche), and she expresses her attachment to it through rural and pastoral lyrics. The regional geography sets the scene in Brittany, and the various protagonists of the tales criss-cross the land, following the rivers and fields that mark out their peregrinations.
Cercle du Chêne's style is fully identified by the collaboration of artists firmly rooted in their history, their musical touch and their personality. La Griesche surrounds herself with talented musicians and true devotees. Together, they create a very special and recognizable atmosphere, which is truly revealing and not easy for this branch of black metal. The vocals are often set to a minstrel “tambourine” rhythm, discernible from the half-deep, half-tinkling drums. Here and there, these tinkling cymbals are superimposed on synthetic organs, much to our delight.
‘Sur les toits d'une tour’ is a pure dungeon synth track with a distinctive medieval feel and male backing vocals. The synthesizer parts composed by Hyver pay homage to the style in the most honorable and personal way with regard to this medieval peculiarity. Geoffroy Dell'Aria (Skyforger, Paydretz, Grylle) returns with his evocatively subtle bagpipes on 'Aux jours de chasse', where Celtic bellows intrude on the epic and symphonic melody. The guitars pick up the pace brilliantly, creating an ambiance worthy of the greatest names in the genre.
The "Première Rencontre" EP released in 2023 spoiled us with 4 darker tracks, with a more strident production and raw vocals whose arrangements are more distinct on this debut album. "Récits d'Automne et de Chasse" will be released on March 21 on La Griesche's heart-and-blood label, Antiq Records. A must-have in a self-defined genre, and a jewel that will remain in the Epic Dungeon Synth Black Metal history.
